Here's the Career Risk Hiding in Plain Sight

Something is shifting in the individuals we work with.

They're smart, experienced, and deeply capable. They're also reaching for AI tools faster than ever and while that part is good, underneath the efficiency gains, we're noticing a pattern we need to say out loud.

A lot of people are using AI to skip the thinking! 

We see it show up in two ways consistently. First: using AI to build something without doing the foundational work first skipping the strategy, skipping the reflection, going straight to the output. Second: accepting what AI returns as fact, without questioning the source, the currency of the data, or whether it actually applies to your situation.

Both are understandable. AI feels authoritative. It's fast. It sounds confident.

But confidence isn't the same as accuracy or big-picture strategy and in a career context, the cost of that confusion can be significant.

A Better Way to Think About it

When the internet arrived, the fear was that it would make expertise obsolete: why pay a professional when anyone can Google the answer?

What actually happened was the opposite. The internet made good judgment more valuable, not less. Anyone could find information. Far fewer people could evaluate it, apply it, and make something useful from it.

AI is the same shift, accelerated.

The women who will thrive in the next five years aren't the ones who avoid AI — or the ones who blindly defer to it. They're the ones who treat it like any other powerful tool: understanding what it's good at, knowing its limits, and staying firmly in the driver's seat.

And remember: You don't have to figure this out alone.

What Staying in the Driver’s Seat Actually Looks Like:

•	Do the thinking first. Use AI to pressure-test, expand, or execute. Do not use it to replace the initial work.

•	Vet every output. Ask: where did this come from? When was the training data last updated? Does this apply to my specific context?

•	Keep your voice in the room. AI can draft. It cannot own. Make sure what goes out under your name sounds like you and is something you can defend.

•	Build the skill of prompting well. The quality of what you get back is directly tied to the quality of what you put in. That's a learnable skill and a competitive advantage.

AI literacy isn't just a technical skill anymore. It's a career skill. And like any skill, it's the difference between a tool that serves you and one that quietly replaces your thinking.
